Prior to playing Sutton in The Bold Type, American actress and singer Meghann Fahy has been in numerous shows in theatre, film and tv.

In this exclusive interview, The Bold Type star opens up about her acting journey, her dream role, The Bold Type, and being inspired by people who are living their truths.

Hi, Meghann! Tell us a little about your story. Who is Meghann Fahy and how did you get into acting?

I’m from Massachusetts and I grew up wanting to be a singer one day. When I was 18 just after high school graduation my mom took me to an open call in New York for a musical. I sang for Bernie Telsey and he asked me to come back and audition to be the understudy in a show called “Next to Normal” which is a role I ended up making my broadway debut performing when I assumed the role after the original cast left!

As an actor, what type of roles and genres do you normally gravitate towards?

I tend to gravitate toward characters that I feel like I know something about, but can learn something from. Which I guess is a pretty vague answer. But the truth is any character who makes me feel something - whether it’s understood or scared or happy or sad - excites me.

Let’s talk a little bit about your character Sutton Brady from The Bold Type. How would you describe her to people who just started watching the show?

Sutton grew up in a small suburban town with and was more of a caretaker to her mother than she was a daughter. She’s scrappy, values hard work and understands that success comes from that work. She’s also really funny and creative.

Are you and Sutton anything alike?

I find a lot of similarities between Sutton and myself. I think we both have chosen career paths that are difficult to make a name for yourself in that require a lot of sacrifice and uncertainty. I also like to think that I bring a lot of myself to her, my sense of humor and sensitivity to others are things I think Sutton and I share.

What can you tease about the upcoming season and what’s in store for Sutton and the gang?

Season 3 is almost done airing, but we just got picked up for season 4 and start shooting in July! I can’t wait to see what our writers have in store for upcoming episodes. I’ve said this a lot, but I am really lobbying for a brunch episode. And also a vacation episode.

What’s your dream role/project?

My dream right now is to produce a film that my friends have written. I can’t think of anything more special than getting to make art with people you really love and admire.

What inspires you?

What inspires me is people who are living their truths. It’s a difficult thing to do, but it’s such a brave and better existence to chase. I’m so happy with all of the movements that have come to be amongst my generation, and generations before and after mine. There’s so much good happening in spite of all of the bad, and that is certainly inspiring.

Aside from acting, what do you normally enjoy doing in your free time?

I’m a big yogi! And when I’m not working I love to travel - I really did get addicted once I started. The world is so big and I want to see as much of it as possible

If you were a book, what kind of book would you be and why?

If I were a book I would be the kind of book that you can’t put down that makes you laugh and cry and then laugh again. If I had to name the book it would be called “left handed girl in a right handed world” and it would be a memoir that I can’t write until I’m super old.
